Tramin Unterebner Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Overview

Made from Pinot Grigio grown at 400–600 metres in Alto Adige, Unterebner combines ripe fruit and rich texture with the freshness of its Alpine mountain climate. Fermentation and maturation in oak and tonneaux create layers of pear, toasted bread, vanilla, tobacco and spice, while bright acidity and mineral character keep the wine precise and fresh.

Its richness makes it particularly suited to seafood, poultry, creamy dishes and mature cheeses. Impressive food-friendly bottle for celebrations, dinner parties or gifting.

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Cantina Tramin

Cantina Tramin produces wines from the distinctive vineyards surrounding Termeno in Alto Adige, where steep mountain slopes, warm Mediterranean air and cool Alpine currents create an exceptional environment for viticulture. The contrast between day and night temperatures helps preserve acidity and aromatic precision, while the region’s varied soils contribute texture and complexity.

The cooperative works with a broad selection of traditional Alto Adige varieties, including Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Schiava and Lagrein. Grapes come from vineyards managed by the cooperative’s member growers, with careful selection of sites and fruit allowing each variety to express its individual character.

Cantina Tramin combines the collective experience of its growers with precise modern cellar work, while maintaining a strong focus on sustainable vineyard management and the preservation of Alto Adige’s natural environment. The result is a range of wines that balance Alpine freshness with the richness and generosity of Italy’s northern Mediterranean climate.

FAQs For Tramin Unterebner Alto Adige Pinot Grigio

How is this wine made?

Grapes are harvested in mid‑September and delivered in small bins to preserve quality. They are gently pressed, and the must ferments slowly at controlled temperatures (18-20°C). Fermentation takes place partly in large oak barrels (30-40 hl) and partly in tonneaux, where malolactic fermentation also occurs. Clarification happens naturally through sedimentation.

Maturation continues in large oak barrels with a smaller portion in tonneaux, always on the lees until the end of August. After bottling, the wine rests for at least three months, resulting in a total maturation period of around 14 months. This extended lees ageing builds texture, depth and signature Unterebner complexity.

Can I drink this why now?

Yes. This vintage is ready to enjoy, but it also has an estimated ageing potential of 7–10 years. Further bottle ageing can allow its complex flavours and texture to evolve.

What does the oak ageing contribute?

Oak fermentation and maturation add texture and complexity, contributing to flavours and aromas such as toasted bread, butter, vanilla and subtle spice. The use of large barrels and tonneaux allows the oak to complement rather than overwhelm the Pinot Grigio.

What is the soil like where the grapes are grown?

The vineyards are planted on calcareous gravel with loam over porphyry bedrock. This distinctive alpine terroir contributes to the wine's mineral character and sense of place.
