Dow's Port Wine

Dow's has been making port in the Douro Valley since 1798, and the house is known above all for its vintage declarations, structured, dry-finishing wines that age for decades. The range here runs from the ready-to-drink LBV's to single-quinta vintages and rare Library Release for serious collectors.

About Dow's Port Wine

Dows Winery & Vineyards

Dow's is part of the Symington family portfolio alongside Graham's, Warre's and Quinta do Vesuvio, but it has always maintained a distinct house style. Where Graham's is plush and rich, Dow's is drier and more austere. The vintage ports in particular are known for their firm tannins and a characteristic finish that wine writers often describe as having a hint of dark chocolate and dried herbs.

The house owns two flagship quintas in the Douro Superior. Quinta do Bomfim, near Pinhao, is one of the oldest and most celebrated single quintas in the valley and produces the estate's single-quinta vintage in years when a full declaration is not made. Quinta Senhora da Ribeira sits further up the valley in the Douro Superior and produces some of the most powerful and concentrated wines in the range.

Dow's Port Wine FAQs

What is Dow's house style?

Dow's is known for producing drier, more structured ports than many of its neighbours. The vintage ports in particular have firm tannins and a long, dry finish with notes of dark chocolate, dried herbs and black fruit. They reward patience and are among the most age-worthy ports produced in the Douro.

What is the difference between Dow's Quinta do Bomfim and a declared vintage?

In years when Dow's does not make a full vintage declaration, they bottle the wine from Quinta do Bomfim as a single-quinta vintage. These wines are made to the same standard as a full declaration but from a single estate rather than a blend across the valley. They are often more approachable slightly earlier and are popular with collectors looking for mature Dow's at a more accessible price.

Is Dow's LBV port ready to drink now?

Yes. LBV, Late Bottled Vintage, spends four to six years in cask before bottling, so the wine is already well-developed. The 2020 can be opened and served straight from the bottle without decanting.

Can Dow's port bottles be engraved?

Yes. The LBV, single-quinta vintages and tawnies in this collection carry the engraving option. Look for the Engraving badge on each listing and add your message at checkout.

What food pairs well with Dow's vintage port?

Vintage port is a classic match for Stilton and other blue cheeses. The firm, tannic structure of Dow's also holds up well against dark chocolate and walnuts. The 10 Year Old Tawny is more versatile and pairs well with almonds, dried apricots and creme brulee.

How long will Dow's vintage port keep once opened?

A vintage port will keep for two to three weeks once opened if re-corked and stored in a cool place. A vacuum wine stopper will extend this further. The LBV and tawny are less sensitive and will keep for four to six weeks.
