Crusted port wine has always been a peculiarly British speciality, a product of the first wine merchants who brought port into the UK in bulk and then bottled it here. Crusted port is a very high quality ruby port that has been bottled after three years in casks unfiltered. This means the port wine continues to improve in the bottle where it will throw a "crust" sediment just like a vintage port.

Because crusted port is required to be aged in the bottle for at least three years before it is released to the market, most producers keep the bottles for longer, so they are ready to be drunk and enjoyed when sold. This makes this type of port a popular and affordable alternative to vintage port. It needs to be decanted before drinking.
