A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Quinta Da Pedra

Quinta da Pedra is a historic wine estate in Moncao and Melgaco, in the Alto Minho sub-region of Vinho Verde in northern Portugal. Dating from the 17th century, it is regarded as one of the oldest and most significant properties in the region.

The estate covers approximately 30 hectares, with a substantial continuous vineyard surrounding the historic property. Its long connection with the area reflects the importance of viticulture in this part of northern Portugal, where Alvarinho has become the defining grape variety of Moncao and Melgaco.

Quinta da Pedra is now part of Fladgate Family Wines, following the acquisition of IdealDrinks by The Fladgate Partnership in 2023. The estate forms part of a portfolio that brings together selected properties from Vinho Verde, Bairrada and Dao.

Rather than treating Quinta da Pedra simply as a source of grapes, Fladgate Family Wines has maintained the estate as a distinct expression of its particular location. The focus remains firmly on Alvarinho and the qualities that make Moncao and Melgaco one of Portugal's most respected areas for the variety.

The estate's wines include Milagres by Quinta da Pedra and Graca da Pedra, with selected older vintages of Milagres also released as limited Purple Editions. This focus on individual wines and extended ageing reflects the estate's belief in the quality and longevity of Alvarinho from the property.

FAQs For Quinta Da Pedra Graca Da Pedra Alvarinho

What is Alvarinho?

Alvarinho is a Portuguese white grape variety known for producing aromatic, fresh and concentrated wines. It is particularly associated with Moncao and Melgaco.

Is Alvarinho the same grape as Albarino?

Yes. Alvarinho is the Portuguese name for the grape known as Albarino in Spain. It is also widely planted across the border in Galicia.

What does the mineral character mean?

The subtle mineral nuance adds freshness and definition to the palate. It is a flavour impression rather than an indication that minerals have been added to the wine.

How does Alvarinho compare with Sauvignon Blanc?

Both can offer fresh citrus flavours and lively acidity, but Alvarinho often has a rounder fruit character and distinctive aromatic profile. This example combines citrus and green apple with floral and subtle tropical notes.
