Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Herencia Altes

Herencia Altes is a family-owned winery in Terra Alta, Catalonia, founded by Nuria Altes and Rafael De Haan in 2010. For Nuria, the project represents a return to the vineyards and winemaking heritage of her family in Batea, where she grew up surrounded by vines.

Nuria came from generations of vine growers and developed a detailed understanding of the local wine industry before establishing Herencia Altes. Rafael, who was born in Kent to an English father and Spanish mother, discovered Terra Alta through his passion for authentic wines and eventually made the region his home.

Together, they began working the family's vineyards and built a winery based on their shared belief that wines should express where they come from. Their project is closely connected with the history, landscape and agricultural traditions of Terra Alta.

Preserving this heritage is central to the producer's identity. Herencia Altes protects old vines, traditional dry-stone walls and the surrounding landscape while continuing the region's viticultural traditions through a modern family winery.

The result is a producer whose wines are intended to communicate the character of Terra Alta, while maintaining a strong connection with the people, vineyards and generations that came before them.
