Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Quinta Colinas de Sao Lourenco

Quinta Colinas de Sao Lourenco is a prestigious wine estate in Sao Lourenco do Bairro, at the heart of Portugal's Bairrada region. The property has been associated with the Cerveira family since 1958, when Silvio Cerveira acquired the original seven-hectare estate.

A major period of development began in 2001, when Silvio Cerveira expanded the property and built a modern winery equipped with gravity-fed movement for grapes, must and wine. The following years saw extensive vineyard restructuring, with new plantings introduced alongside the preservation of older indigenous vines.

The estate produced its first harvest under the new management in 2003 and launched its first own-label wine. In 2004, French oenologist Pascal Chatonnet joined as a consultant, bringing additional expertise and helping shape the direction of the wines.

His influence led to the creation of Principal in 2005. First released commercially in 2008, the wine quickly became the estate's flagship expression and subsequently gained international recognition.

Carlos Dias acquired the property in 2009, continuing its development before The Fladgate Partnership acquired IdealDrinks in 2023. This brought Quinta Colinas de Sao Lourenco into the Fladgate Family Wines portfolio and marked a new phase for the estate.

The producer has since introduced the Calcario3 do Principal identity for its still wines, while Colinas is now dedicated to its sparkling wines. This clearer division reflects the estate's ambition to develop both its still and traditional-method sparkling wines while retaining a strong connection with Bairrada.
