FAQs For Kopke Colheita Port 1996

How is this port made?

The grapes are hand‑picked at optimum maturity, destemmed and crushed before undergoing traditional maceration in lagares. Constant churning during fermentation ensures maximum extraction of colour, tannin and aroma. Once the ideal sweetness (baumé) is reached, grape brandy is added to halt fermentation and create the final fortified wine.

This single‑harvest Port is then aged in seasoned oak barrels for a minimum of seven years, though Kopke’s Colheitas typically mature far longer. Slow oxidative ageing develops its golden hue, nutty aromatics and silky texture. Bottled according to demand, each release reflects both the vintage and the quiet patience of cask maturation.

Does it need decanting?

No. Colheita Port is generally filtered and ready to serve directly from the bottle.

Does it continue ageing in the bottle?

The majority of maturation occurs in oak casks before bottling. While the wine can evolve slowly in bottle, it is released ready to drink.

Has this Port received any awards?

Yes. Kopke Colheita Port 1996 received 92 points from Roy Hersh (For The Love Of Port), recognising its quality and maturity.
