Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Rozes

Rozes is a historic Port wine producer founded in 1855 in Bordeaux, France, by Ostende Rozes, a wine merchant with a passion for the wines of Portugal. Originally established to trade and export Port, the house became one of the first major Port companies to establish a presence within the Douro wine region.

The reputation of Rozes grew significantly under the leadership of Ostende’s son, Edmond Rozes, who developed the brand during the early 20th century and created the distinctive Portuguese-style bottle that became a signature of the house. In 1910, the company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia, the historic centre of Port wine ageing and trade.

Today, Rozes continues its long tradition as part of the Vranken-Pommery Monopole Group, combining more than 160 years of Port expertise with modern innovation. The house remains dedicated to expressing the character of the Douro through carefully crafted Ports recognised for their elegance, richness and balance.

Rozes LBV Port 2019 FAQs

How is this port made?

This LBV is produced from top‑quality wines selected from an outstanding harvest. Grapes are macerated in traditional lagares to maximise colour and tannin extraction, alongside stainless steel vats for controlled fermentation. Fermentation is stopped with grape spirit to preserve natural sweetness and intensity.

The wine is aged for four years in stainless steel, allowing fruit purity and structure to develop. Bottled unfiltered, it retains the depth, concentration and expressive character typical of premium LBV Ports.

Is LBV Port the same as Vintage Port?

No. Although both come from a single harvest year, they are matured differently. Vintage Port is bottled earlier and relies on long bottle ageing, whereas LBV Port spends more time maturing before bottling, giving it a more approachable character when released.

Should LBV Port be decanted before serving?

Unfiltered LBV Ports can develop sediment, so decanting is often recommended. It also gives the wine a chance to open up, allowing its full character to be appreciated.

Can this port be aged further?

Yes, although it is already enjoyable, an unfiltered LBV can continue developing in bottle when stored correctly. Over time, the flavours can become more integrated and the texture even smoother.
