Made only in declared years, blending wines from the house's three estates. Panascal, in the Tavora Valley, brings opulent, velvety fruit. Cruzeiro gives concentrated black fruit and firm grip. Santo Antonio adds fragrance and fresh acidity.

The 2016 season was challenging: heavy spring rain reduced yields, but ripening was even and a spell of rain in mid-September was followed by perfect picking conditions. Fonseca picked each estate at its optimum, from 21 September at Panascal to 6 October at Santo Antonio. The grapes were foot-trodden in granite lagares, and the wine was aged for two years in oak before being bottled unfiltered. The result is a dense, pure and exceptionally structured Port, with only around 5,000 cases made.

Tasting Profile

• Appearance: Dense, almost inky purple with a narrow purple rim.
• Nose: Intense and pure black cherry, cassis and blackberry jam, lifted by mint, violets and clove, with a subtle undertone of tropical fruit.
• Palate: Sweet and lively on entry, with compact black fruit, dark chocolate and a hint of ginger. Its dense texture is held together by powerful, fine-grained tannins.
• Finish: Long and energetic, with a coiled intensity that promises decades of development.
