FAQ's For Fonseca Quinta Do Panascal Port 2008

What Is a Quinta do Panascal Port?

Quinta do Panascal Port is a single‑estate Vintage Port made entirely from grapes grown at Fonseca’s flagship vineyard, Quinta do Panascal, in the Cima Corgo region of the Douro Valley. The estate is known for producing Ports with a naturally rich, opulent and velvety style, thanks to its warm slopes, schist soils and ideal sun exposure.

Because the wine comes from one specific vineyard rather than a blend of estates, it shows a very distinctive character: plump dark‑fruit flavours, warm spice, smoky notes and a beautifully satiny texture. In years when vineyards declare a full Vintage, the quality from Panascal is often exceptional enough to bottle on its own, making these releases both expressive and collectible.

In short, a Quinta do Panascal Port is a single‑vineyard Vintage Port that highlights the richness, warmth and signature depth of one of Fonseca’s most important estates.

What makes this vintage unique?

The vintage began with a very dry winter, receiving only a fraction of normal rainfall. This created low disease pressure but also left the vines under early water stress, slowing growth and raising concerns about ripening potential.

As the season progressed, conditions improved dramatically: the ripening period brought perfect, stable weather, allowing the fruit to develop evenly. Cooler‑than‑usual temperatures late in the season helped preserve fresh berry aromatics and natural acidity, while the dry conditions concentrated flavour and structure.

The result was a harvest that produced Ports with excellent clarity, freshness, and well‑defined fruit, supported by firm structure and impressive balance.

Does it contain sediment?

Yes Vintage Port naturally forms sediment and must be decanted. See our guide on how to decant vintage port.

How should it be stored?
  • Before opening this Port store on its side, in a cool, dark place at a stable temperature up to 16°C.
  • Once opened it will typically last for 2–3 days if stored cool and sealed; Vintage Port is less stable than Tawny styles.
