Dom Bella Cabernet Franc Overview

Dom Bella Cabernet Franc is a rare single-variety Cabernet Franc from Portugal's Dao region, grown on the granite soils of Quinta de Bella. It's elegant and layered, with dark and red berries, violet, liquorice and crushed pepper, and has bright acidity and a mineral finish.

It's an excellent match for rich beef stews, roast lamb or game. It's a standout choice for Cabernet Franc lovers and anyone curious about Portugal's more unusual fine wines.

Tasting Notes

Dom Bella Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is best known from the Loire Valley and Bordeaux, but at Quinta de Bella it has found a remarkable home in the Dao. The estate sits beside the Dao River near Viseu, at around 380 metres above sea level, and its vines grow on gentle slopes of sandy granite soil. The continental climate brings warm days and cool nights, giving concentrated fruit with fresh acidity. The vineyards are densely planted and completely dry-farmed.

After careful sorting, the grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with a 20-day maceration using delestage, a technique that gently extracts colour and softens tannins. The wine is then aged for up to 24 months in seasoned 225-litre French oak barrels, and rests for at least four more years in bottle before release. That long ageing means it arrives already showing depth and complexity.

Tasting Profile

  • Appearance: Ruby.
  • Nose: Expressive dark and red berries, including blackberry, cassis, cherry and raspberry, with violet, liquorice, crushed pepper and a hint of green pepper typical of Cabernet Franc.
  • Palate: Full and elegant, with vibrant acidity and a firm, iron-like structure. Subtle, well-integrated toast from the oak adds depth.
  • Finish: Long and layered, with mineral notes and a touch of pencil shavings.

Occasion & Buyer Profile

This is a wine for the curious red wine lover who enjoys discovering something beyond the usual choices. If you like Loire reds such as Chinon or Saumur-Champigny, or right-bank Bordeaux such as Saint-Emilion, you'll find a familiar grape expressed in a completely new way. It's a talking point at a dinner party, a standout bottle for a Sunday roast, and a thoughtful gift for a friend who's into wine.

Fans of Portuguese wine will appreciate it as a rarity from the Dao, a region better known for native grapes such as Touriga Nacional. With several years of bottle age already behind it, it's ready to enjoy now, and it also has the structure to keep developing for several more years.

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Dom Bella

Quinta da Bella is a wine estate in Portugal’s Dao region, surrounded by the mountains and forests of central Portugal. The property covers around 50 hectares at approximately 380 metres above sea level, benefiting from its position close to the Dao River.

The Dao is known for producing wines with elegance, freshness and ageing potential. Its inland position brings a continental climate, while the surrounding Serra da Estrela mountains help shape the character of the region. Quinta da Bella reflects this distinctive setting through wines that combine concentration with freshness and structure.

The estate focuses on wines that express individual grape varieties and vintages. Its range includes the Bella Elegance wines, which emphasise fruit and varietal character, alongside the more structured Dom Bella wines. Dom Bella wines are produced only in exceptional vintages and receive maturation in seasoned oak.

Quinta da Bella’s wines offer an individual expression of the Dao, combining the region’s traditional elegance with a more concentrated and structured style. The estate’s position, altitude and distinctive granite soils all contribute to its identity as a producer within this historic Portuguese wine region.

FAQs For Dom Bella Cabernet Franc

Why is a Portuguese wine made from Cabernet Franc?

Cabernet Franc is a French grape, but the Dao's granite soils, altitude and continental climate suit it well. The result keeps the grape's classic peppery, floral character while bringing a distinctly Portuguese freshness and minerality.

How does it compare with a Loire Cabernet Franc?

It shares the grape's typical red and black fruit, pepper and violet notes, but it's generally fuller and more structured, with the extra depth of long barrel and bottle ageing.

What does "Vinho Regional Terras do Dao" mean?

It's the regional classification for wines made in the Dao area. Winemakers use it for wines from grape varieties outside the rules of the Dao DOC, such as Cabernet Franc.

Does it need decanting?

Decanting for 30–60 minutes helps the aromas open up and softens the structure, though it's not essential.
