Bodegas Roda Reserva 2021 Magnum Overview

This Rioja Reserva is a Spanish red wine from Haro in Rioja, made from carefully selected old-vine grapes and matured in French oak. Black cherry, red plum and wild berries lead the nose, with cedar, cocoa and sweet spice adding complexity. The palate is polished and finely textured, combining ripe fruit with fresh acidity and integrated tannins. Tobacco and dried herbs emerge on the long, persistent finish.

Pairs well with roast lamb, dry-aged beef and rich mushroom dishes. Its combination of mature fruit and freshness makes it suited to Sunday roasts, dinner parties, special occasions and relaxed evenings.

Produced in Haro from carefully selected old-vine fruit, this Rioja Reserva combines traditional regional character with a more contemporary style. The result is a polished, balanced red with the freshness and structure to develop further in bottle.

Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Bodegas Roda

Bodegas Roda was founded in 1987 when the Rotllant Daurella family arrived in Rioja with the ambition of developing a different approach to winemaking. The project began in Haro, at the heart of Rioja's historic Barrio de la Estacion, where the winery overlooks the River Ebro.

The winery occupies a historic site built over a 19th-century underground cellar. These traditional cellars were once used by local growers to store their harvests before wines were transported by railway to Bordeaux during the period following the phylloxera crisis.

From its beginnings, Roda has combined the traditions of Rioja with research, innovation and close attention to individual vineyards. The winery has expanded in several stages, with developments in 1991, 1996, 2000 and 2018 responding to the changing needs of production.

Research has remained an important part of the business. Since 1998, Roda has developed successive research and development programmes covering viticulture, winemaking and technological innovation. This long-term approach supports its aim of producing wines that reflect the character of each vintage.

The winery now produces a focused range of Rioja wines, including Roda Sela, Roda, Roda I, Cirsion, Roda I Blanco and Rosado Perdigon Reserva. The wider group also includes Bodegas La Horra in Ribera del Duero and Aubocassa in Mallorca.

Today, Bodegas Roda remains closely associated with Haro and the historic Barrio de la Estacion. Its development over four decades has established a modern Rioja producer built around vineyard selection, research and a consistent pursuit of quality.

FAQs For Bodegas Roda Reserva 2021 Magnum

How is this wine made?

The wine begins with carefully selected old-vine fruit and is made with a precise approach designed to preserve fruit purity. It then undergoes careful maturation in French oak, allowing the wine to develop structure and complexity while retaining its fresh fruit character.

Does this Rioja have a strong oaky flavour?

No. The oak influence is described as restrained and well integrated, adding complexity without overwhelming the black cherry, plum and berry fruit.

What does Reserva mean on the label?

Reserva is a regulated Rioja ageing category. It indicates that the wine has undergone longer ageing before release than a standard Crianza, although exact ageing requirements depend on the Rioja regulations applicable to the wine.

How should I serve this wine?

Serve it at around 16–18°C. Slightly below typical room temperature helps preserve freshness while allowing the fruit and oak complexity to show clearly. Decanting is not essential, but it can be beneficial if the wine is young or has been stored for some time. Around 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help open the aromas and soften the presentation. Serve in a large Bordeaux or red wine glass. The wider bowl gives the wine space to open and allows its fruit, oak and savoury aromas to develop.
