Tasting Notes

Dows LBV Port & Courvoisier VSOP Cognac Gift Boxed Set

Our port and cognac gift sets bring together the finest names from Portugal's Douro Valley and France's Cognac region. Each pairing hand-selected by our WSET team for complementary character, balance and gifting appeal.

This pairing brings together Dow's LBV, one of the most structured and celebrated Late Bottled Vintage ports available. Alongside Courvoisier VSOP Cognac, a significantly richer and more complex spirit than the entry-level VS. Two full-size bottles, both gift boxed, from two producers with centuries of combined expertise. A gift that makes a genuine statement at any occasion.

Tasting Profile:

  • Dow's LBV Port 75cl: Dow's is celebrated for producing some of the most structured and age-worthy ports in the Douro Valley, and their LBV is no exception. Aged four to six years in seasoned oak, it delivers an intense, concentrated core of black fruits. Layers of dark chocolate, warming spice and a firm, elegant tannic finish.
  • Courvoisier VSOP Cognac 70cl: Aged a minimum of four years, Courvoisier VSOP develops noticeably more complexity than the entry-level VS. Dried apricot, toasted oak and warm vanilla on the nose, with a palate of honey, spice and ripe stone fruit. The finish is long and refined with a gentle warmth that lingers.

Occasion & Buyer Profile

This gift set sits confidently in the premium gift bracket, generous enough to mark a significant occasion without crossing into collector territory. Ideal for a 40th, 50th or 60th birthday, a retirement, a wedding anniversary, or a corporate gesture where quality and presentation both matter.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this wine and spirit pairing, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

With Dow's LBV Port: Serve after dinner at 16-18°C. Dow's structured, firm style pairs particularly well with strong cheeses. Also superb with dark chocolate truffles, chocolate tart or a walnut and fig cake. The firm tannic backbone means it can handle bolder flavours than lighter port styles.

With Courvoisier VSOP Cognac: Best enjoyed neat or over a single piece of ice as a digestif. VSOP has sufficient complexity to reward slow sipping without food accompaniment. If pairing, try creme brulee, almond tart or dark chocolate.

Meet The Producer

Meet The Producers Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and approach to wines and spirits.

Dow's & Courvoisier

Dow's: Founded in 1798, Dow's is one of the oldest and most respected port houses in the Douro Valley. Over two centuries of winemaking expertise that shows in every bottle. Known for producing ports of exceptional structure and ageing potential, Dow's style is characteristically darker and more austere than many of its peers. A hallmark that makes their LBV particularly distinctive. The house remains part of the Symington Family Estates, one of the great family-owned port groups.

Courvoisier Cognac: Founded in the early 1800s and based in Jarnac in the Charente, Courvoisier is one of the great names in French Cognac. Famously associated with Napoleon Bonaparte and known as "The Cognac of Napoleon."

Our Review:

"Dow's brings a darker, structured character, grip and intensity. Making the contrast with the honeyed, smooth VSOP even more striking. A brilliantly balanced duo that would impress any serious wine and spirits lover."

FAQs For Dows Port & Courvoisier Cognac

What makes Dow's LBV different from other LBV ports?

Dow's is known for producing a darker, more structured LBV than many of its peers. More tannic, more intense and built to reward patience in the glass. Where some LBVs are soft and immediately approachable, Dow's has genuine grip and complexity that develops as it opens. For anyone who prefers a more serious, age-worthy style of port this is the LBV to reach for.

What is the difference between VS and VSOP Cognac?

VS (Very Special) Cognac is aged a minimum of two years, bright, fresh and approachable. VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) is aged a minimum of four years, developing significantly more complexity, depth and a longer, more refined finish. The VSOP in this set represents a genuine step up in quality and is noticeably richer and more rewarding to sip slowly.

What is the difference between port and cognac?

Port is a fortified wine from Portugal's Douro Valley. Grape spirit is added during fermentation to preserve natural sweetness and raise the alcohol. Cognac is a distilled spirit from France's Charente region, made by double-distilling wine and ageing it in oak barrels.

Both are traditionally enjoyed after dinner, both are aged in oak, and both reward slow attentive drinking, which is why they pair so naturally as a gift set.

Which should be enjoyed first? The port or the cognac.

We'd suggest starting with the Courvoisier VSOP before or between courses, its lighter, more refined structure works well earlier in the evening. The Dow's LBV is best saved for after dinner alongside cheese or chocolate, where its bold dark fruit and firm tannins come fully into their own.
