Tasting Notes

Chateau De Laubade Bas Armagnac 1987 Vintage

A spirit with a direct connection to its vintage, Chateau de Laubade Bas-Armagnac 1987 captures the character of a single harvest from one of Gascony’s distinguished Armagnac estates. The grapes are grown exclusively at Chateau de Laubade and distilled in-house, before being entrusted to the estate’s own Gascon oak casks for careful maturation.

The blend of Baco, Folle Blanche, Colombard and Ugni Blanc brings together fruit, floral freshness and mature oak complexity. On the nose, candied tangerine sits alongside vanilla and toast, while the palate is smooth, rounded and gently fruity before giving way to a remarkably persistent finish.

With its 1987 vintage, this is more than an aged spirit: it is a bottle that can mark a particular year, making it especially attractive for milestone birthdays and celebrations. The Celebration range is made up of rare single-vintage Armagnacs, with each bottle carrying its own bottling date to document its precise maturation.

Tasting Profile:

  • Colour: Bright amber with a warm, mature glow.
  • Aromas: Candied tangerine, vanilla and toasted oak create an expressive, fruit-led bouquet.
  • Palate: Smooth and supple, with generous fruit balanced by attractive toasted flavours.
  • Finish: Very long and elegant, leaving a refined combination of citrus, vanilla and oak.

Occasion & Buyer Profile

Perfect for 40th birthdays and 1987 birth-year gifts, particularly when looking for something more personal and enduring than a conventional bottle of wine or spirits.

FAQs For Chateau De Laubade Bas Armagnac 1987 Vintage

How is it made?

Laubade is the only Armagnac house that cooperates its own casks, giving complete control over maturation. Gascony oak is selected for tight grain and high tannin content. Staves are seasoned outdoors, then crafted into barrels on the estate. Each grape variety is distilled separately to preserve its unique aromatic profile. Distillation occurs at low temperatures, producing a spirit rich in congeners, ideal for long ageing. The blend differs year to year, shaped by the natural character of the eaux‑de‑vie. Once the cellar master judges the spirit to have reached optimal maturity, it is bottled with its own bottling date, guaranteeing precise ageing.

Has this spirit won any awards?

Yes. The vintage received a Gold Medal at the World Spirits Awards in 2017 and a Silver Medal at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2016.

How old is this armagnac vintage?

It is a mature vintage from the 1987 harvest. The Celebration range contains rare vintages aged between approximately 15 and 49 years, with each bottle's bottling date identifying its precise maturation period.

How should it be served?

It is best enjoyed slowly at room temperature in a brandy or Armagnac glass. Allowing the spirit to rest in the glass for a few moments helps reveal its candied citrus, vanilla and toasted aromas.
