Alves De Sousa Abandonado
Deep and expressive, Alves de Sousa Abandonado is a striking red wine from the renowned Douro Valley, embodying the strength and soul of one of Portugal’s most iconic wine regions. Its intense ruby colour is just the beginning of a wine that offers exceptional complexity and elegance.
- The nose reveals a captivating mix of eucalyptus, dark berries, and refined coffee, underpinned by subtle touches of tar, forest floor, and spice.
- On the palate, it is layered and powerful, delivering rich black fruit, finely integrated oak, and a texture that speaks to both craftsmanship and terroir.
- With its formidable structure and refined tannins, Abandonado promises outstanding cellaring potential, capable of evolving gracefully over the next 15 to 20 years, continuously revealing new depths.
This wine is the legacy of Domingos Alves de Sousa, a pioneer who transformed his family’s role from growers to acclaimed producers. After decades of supplying fruit to Port houses, Domingos began bottling under the family name in 1987. Drawing on viticultural training from Bordeaux and Portugal, he expanded the estate with new vineyards and a cutting-edge winery at Quinta da Gaivosa, where the first vintage was released in 1991.
Since then, the estate has become a benchmark in Portuguese winemaking. Domingos has been named Producer of the Year by Revista de Vinhos not once, but twice - in 1999 and again in 2006, an honour unmatched by any other. Today, he and his son Tiago Alves de Sousa oversee a portfolio of five quintas, producing a distinguished range of still and fortified wines that continue to earn international acclaim.
Abandonado stands among their finest achievements, a wine of origin, depth, and character, rooted in heritage yet driven by innovation.
