Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

Vintage Port from the Douro region in Portugal.

This vintage port draws on fruit from the same three estates as the classic vintage. Woodland aromatics, herbal complexity and firm tannic structure. Fresh raspberry and cassis drive the palate, finishing long and succulent.

It’s superb with lamb, blue cheese or rich chocolate desserts. Ideal for sharing after dinner.

Tasting Notes

Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port 2012

Very fine and beautifully balanced. This vintage port combines the depth and richness of Quinta do Panascal with the clearly delineated fruit and heady scented quality of the Pinhao Valley.

In certain years when there is no classic Fonseca Vintage Port, a Guimaraens Vintage Port may be made instead. Guimaraens Vintage Ports nevertheless share the origins, heritage and complex fruity style of the classic Fonseca vintages and are drawn from the produce of the same three estates. They differ only in that they are more approachable, ready to drink earlier.

Tasting Notes:

  • Deep ruby black centre with narrow purple rim.
  • Impressive depth and intensity of fruit on the nose. Very fine complex woodland berry aromas intertwined with discreet resiny, balsamic scents of garrigue, rock rose and wild herbs.
  • On the palate the dark fruit flavours have a surprising freshness and a tight mesh of thick, grippy tannins provides both structure and volume.
  • A wonderfully long finish leaving succulent flavours of raspberry and cassis.

Food Pairing:

Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, berry desserts, or mature cheeses.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this wine, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

Slow‑roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and black olives works beautifully, as the meat’s savoury depth and natural fattiness meet the wine’s dark woodland berry character and firm tannins. The fresh lift in the fruit cuts through the richness, and a squeeze of lemon before serving brightens the whole pairing.

A wild mushroom and thyme risotto offers an earthy, umami‑rich counterpoint to the port’s cassis and raspberry notes, while the creamy texture softens the wine’s grippy structure. The herbal edge in the glass mirrors the dish’s aromatics, and finishing the risotto with toasted pine nuts adds a lovely bridge.

Our Review:

The colour is incredibly striking, and the nose has this gorgeous mix of woodland fruits, herbs and a subtle balsamic lift. The palate feels powerful yet fresh, with dark fruit wrapped around thick, grippy tannins. I love how the raspberry and cassis linger long after each sip.
