Tawny Port

Tawny port is a style of port wine aged in small oak casks where slow, controlled oxidation gradually transforms the wine over years or decades. Unlike ruby port, which is aged in large tanks to preserve its fresh fruit character, tawny develops complex flavours of dried fruit, walnuts, caramel and toffee as it ages. The age on the label reflects the average age of the blend rather than a single vintage year. A 10 year old tawny is fresher and more fruit-driven with lighter oak influence. A 20 year old offers greater complexity, nuttiness and caramelised depth. A 30 year old is richer and more concentrated with exceptional refinement. A 40 year old is the most intense and elegant expression, with decades of cask ageing producing extraordinary complexity. Each step up represents significantly more time in barrel and a noticeable increase in depth and character.

Tawny port is best served lightly chilled at 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, noticeably cooler than ruby or vintage port. Put it in the fridge for 30 to 45 minutes before serving. Tawny port is one of the most robust port styles once opened, thanks to its long oxidative ageing. Keep it refrigerated with a good stopper and consume within four to six weeks.
