Fonseca Crusted Port In Wooden Gift Box
Crusted is a traditional style and Fonseca is one of very few houses that continue to produce it. It is a blend of rich, full-bodied Ports bottled without fining or filtration.
After bottling, it is kept for several years in the Fonseca cellars, slowly gaining in character and complexity, before being offered for sale. After some time a sediment or 'crust' will form in the bottle, a natural process occurring only in the finest Ports and a sign that they are able to improve in bottle.
This traditional Crusted Port already displays attractive bottle maturity. Drinking superbly now, it is the perfect wine with which to celebrate a special occasion but those preferring to keep it in their cellars can expect it to continue improving in bottle.
The Port is matured for a short time in barrel and then rested in the bottle for three years prior to release. During this period the sediment, which is always unfiltered, forms a crust in the bottle. Therefore giving you a “vintage character” without a vintage price tag. The complexity and layers of flavours are truly stunning. The rich characters of sweet blueberry and raisin are followed by subtle eucalyptus notes and a marzipan finish. Due to the youthfulness of this Port, decanting will indeed help develop flavours, but it is not vital as a ‘crust’ has yet to form.
As Robert Parker wrote in The Wine Buyer's Guide, 'Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports.' James Suckling, in his authoritative book on Vintage Port, put it as follows: 'The Vintage Ports of Fonseca are perhaps the most consistently great of them all. Not only do they have a striking fleshiness and powerful richness when young, but they retain that youthfulness for decades.'
