Meet The Mead Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and crafting approach.

Lanchester Mead

Lancashire Mead Company was founded by husband-and-wife team Gordon Baron and Ann Farrell, following Gordon's determination to create a truly pure mead. In 2009, frustrated by the difficulty of finding traditional mead rather than honey-flavoured wines, Gordon began experimenting with mead-making in his mother's garage. What started as a personal project gradually developed into a much bigger ambition.

Gordon's spiritual beliefs were an important influence on his approach to mead-making. He wanted to produce a drink that was as pure and natural as possible, suitable for his own ritual use and accessible to people with vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements. Years of experimentation with different honeys allowed him to refine his recipes and develop the foundations of what would become Lancashire Mead Company.

Gordon met Ann in 2012 through their local Pagan moot. At the time, he was working as a lorry driver for more than 70 hours a week and spending much of the working week away from home. Encouraged by Ann to pursue his ambition, Gordon left the transport industry on Good Friday 2013 and committed himself to establishing the meadery.

From those humble beginnings in a garage, Lancashire Mead Company has developed into an independent producer dedicated to making authentic mead by hand, with the original emphasis on purity, craftsmanship and personal belief still at the heart of the business.
