A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Alvaro Palacios

Alvaro Palacios is one of the most influential figures in modern Spanish wine, renowned for helping transform the international perception of Spain's fine wines. Born into the Palacios Remondo wine family in Rioja, he chose to develop his own winemaking path after studying in Bordeaux, where he gained experience at Château Petrus.

Returning to Spain, Palacios began searching for exceptional vineyard sites capable of producing wines with genuine character and ageing potential. In 1989, he established himself in Priorat, a rugged region of steep slopes and ancient vines that had fallen into decline. Working with old Garnacha and other Mediterranean varieties, he helped demonstrate the extraordinary quality that could be achieved from the region's dramatic slate soils.

His success in Priorat was followed by a return to the family roots in Rioja, while another major chapter began in Bierzo, where he worked with his nephew Ricardo Perez to establish Descendientes de J. Palacios. Across these regions, his philosophy has remained focused on exceptional vineyards, native varieties and wines that express their individual landscapes.

Today, Alvaro Palacios is regarded as one of Spain's leading winemakers, with his work playing a pivotal role in the country's emergence as a producer of world-class terroir-driven wines.

FAQs For Alvaro Palacios Camins Del Priorat

How is this wine made?

Garnacha and Carinena are sourced from steep, slate‑rich licorella slopes that define Priorat’s identity. These native varieties deliver intensity, freshness and mineral precision, shaped by low yields and dramatic terrain.

They craft Camins with a focus on purity and expression. Gentle extraction, careful fermentation and thoughtful ageing allow fruit, minerality and structure to shine.

Is this a full-bodied wine?

It has a rich, powerful character with concentrated fruit and a firm mineral structure, but it retains elegance and balance rather than feeling overly heavy.

What are licorella soils?

Licorella is the distinctive slate-rich soil found throughout Priorat. The steep vineyards and mineral-rich slate contribute to the region's characteristic intensity and mineral character.

How should this wine be served?

Serve at around 16–18°C. Allowing the wine some time to breathe before drinking can help its fruit, floral and mineral characteristics develop.
