Tasting Notes

Pellegrino Marsala Uncle Joseph Rubino Superiore

A rare premium Rubino Marsala from Sicily, created in honour of Joseph Pellegrino, the family member who helped establish the Pellegrino wine house internationally during the 19th century. Crafted from Nero d’Avola grapes and matured with exceptional care, it represents a traditional style of Marsala that is increasingly uncommon today.

Fortified with five-year-old oak-aged brandy and matured for 24 months in Allier oak casks, this elegant Sicilian fortified wine combines rich red fruit character with depth, sweetness and refined oak complexity.

Tasting Profile:

  • Appearance: Bright ruby red with impressive depth.
  • Nose: Aromatic and expressive, revealing ripe black cherries, plum and delicate pomegranate notes.
  • Palate: Luscious and sweet with flavours of Marasca cherry, red berries and subtle hints of spice and oak.
  • Finish: Smooth, generous and lingering with beautifully balanced fruit sweetness.

Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Pellegrino

Pellegrino is one of Sicily’s most historic and respected wine producers, founded in 1880 by Paolo Pellegrino in Marsala, at the western tip of the island. Built on a passion for Sicilian winemaking and the region’s famous fortified wines, the family winery has played an important role in preserving and promoting the traditions of Marsala wine for more than 140 years.

From its beginnings as a family-owned estate, Pellegrino has grown into one of Sicily’s leading producers while remaining closely connected to the island’s heritage. The winery has expanded its expertise beyond Marsala to include a wide range of still wines, dessert wines and native Sicilian expressions that reflect the diversity of the island’s landscapes.

Today, Cantine Pellegrino remains family-owned and continues to combine generations of knowledge with modern winemaking, championing Sicily’s unique identity through wines that express tradition, authenticity and a strong sense of place.

FAQs For Pellegrino Marsala Uncle Joseph Rubino Superiore

How is this wine made?

Crafted from Nero d’Avola grapes, the wine is fortified with 5‑year‑old oak‑aged brandy, adding depth and structure. It then matures for 24 months in Allier oak casks, developing richness and complexity.

This traditional Sicilian method preserves the Rubino style, a red Marsala expression that is now rare. The result is a fortified wine with sweetness, depth and a vivid ruby profile.

Is Marsala always a cooking wine?

No. While Marsala is widely used in cooking, premium examples such as Pellegrino Uncle Joseph Rubino Superiore are designed for drinking. They offer complexity, sweetness and ageing character that make them suitable as dessert wines or after-dinner drinks.

How should this wine be served?

Serve slightly chilled or at cool room temperature depending on preference. It can be enjoyed on its own as an after-dinner drink or paired with desserts and cheeses.

How should an opened bottle of Marsala be stored?

Once opened, store Marsala in a cool, dark place and keep it sealed. Fortified wines generally keep longer than table wines due to their higher alcohol content.
