Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Marques De Riscal

Founded in 1858 by Guillermo Hurtado de Amezaga, Herederos del Marques de Riscal is one of Rioja's historic wine producers, based in Elciego in Rioja Alavesa, northern Spain. From the outset, the winery looked beyond traditional local practices, introducing Bordeaux-inspired winemaking methods and bottling its own wines. Its first bottled wines appeared in 1862, and in 1895 it became the first non-French wine to receive the Diploma of Honour at the Bordeaux Exhibition.

Marques de Riscal continued to shape Spanish winemaking through its expansion into Rueda in the 1970s, helping establish the region's reputation for quality white wines. It now produces wines across Rioja, Rueda, Castilla y Leon and Getaria, with a portfolio ranging from fresh, approachable styles to premium, age-worthy bottlings. Its vineyards include Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Cabernet Sauvignon in Rioja, alongside Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc in Rueda. Vineyard management, careful grape selection and a combination of traditional cellar practices and modern technology underpin its approach to quality. The estate's City of Wine, opened in 2006, includes historic cellars and a hotel designed by architect Frank O. Gehry.
