Bodegas Roda Sela 2022 Magnum Overview

Bodegas Roda Sela Magnum is a Rioja red wine from northern Spain, made from Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha grapes grown across 28 vineyard blocks beside the Ebro River. Ripe berry and dark fruit aromas lead into a full, structured palate with rich fruit, spice and rounded oak. The wine finishes with warming fruit and lingering oak.

Pairs well with beef, lamb, pork, charcuterie and tapas. The 150cl magnum format makes it particularly suited to dinner parties, celebrations, sharing with friends and larger gatherings.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this red wine, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

Rib-eye steak with rosemary butter and roasted garlic is a natural partner for this style. The wine's rich berry fruit stands up to the depth of the beef, while the structured finish helps cut through the richness. Serve after a short decant to allow the fruit to fully open.

Slow-cooked pork belly with smoked paprika and caramelised onions creates a rewarding match. The sweet-edged fruit complements the richness of the pork, while the oak and spice notes mirror the savoury flavours in the dish. Serve with roasted potatoes for a relaxed weekend meal.

Why We Love This Red Wine

All of our wines are hand picked and tried by us in our tasting room.

Our Review:

"This has loads of ripe berry character, but what I enjoy most is how polished it feels. The fruit, spice and oak all seem to work together without any one element taking over."

Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Bodegas Roda

Bodegas Roda was founded in 1987 when the Rotllant Daurella family arrived in Rioja with the ambition of developing a different approach to winemaking. The project began in Haro, at the heart of Rioja's historic Barrio de la Estacion, where the winery overlooks the River Ebro.

The winery occupies a historic site built over a 19th-century underground cellar. These traditional cellars were once used by local growers to store their harvests before wines were transported by railway to Bordeaux during the period following the phylloxera crisis.

From its beginnings, Roda has combined the traditions of Rioja with research, innovation and close attention to individual vineyards. The winery has expanded in several stages, with developments in 1991, 1996, 2000 and 2018 responding to the changing needs of production.

Research has remained an important part of the business. Since 1998, Roda has developed successive research and development programmes covering viticulture, winemaking and technological innovation. This long-term approach supports its aim of producing wines that reflect the character of each vintage.

The winery now produces a focused range of Rioja wines, including Roda Sela, Roda, Roda I, Cirsion, Roda I Blanco and Rosado Perdigon Reserva. The wider group also includes Bodegas La Horra in Ribera del Duero and Aubocassa in Mallorca.

Today, Bodegas Roda remains closely associated with Haro and the historic Barrio de la Estacion. Its development over four decades has established a modern Rioja producer built around vineyard selection, research and a consistent pursuit of quality.

FAQs For Bodegas Roda Sela 2022 Magnum

What makes the vineyards used for this wine distinctive?

The grapes come from 28 vineyard blocks reaching elevations of up to 650 metres. The combination of different sites and the influence of Continental, Mediterranean and Atlantic climates contributes to the wine's depth and character.

Is Sela full-bodied?

Yes. It has a full, structured style with rich fruit, spice and a rounded oak character.

How should I serve this Magnum?

Serve it at around 16–18°C. Avoid serving it too warm, as higher temperatures can make a full-bodied red seem heavier and reduce its freshness. Use a large Rioja or Bordeaux-style red wine glass. The generous bowl allows the ripe fruit, spice and oak aromas to develop.

Does a magnum age differently from a standard bottle?

Larger formats generally offer a lower ratio of wine to bottle closure, which can support slower development when properly stored. This makes magnums popular with collectors and for wines intended for ageing.
