FAQ's For Kopke Colheita Port 2002

How is it made?

Harvest begins with hand‑picking the grapes at optimal ripeness, followed by destemming, crushing and careful maceration to extract colour, tannins and aromatics. Fermentation takes place in vats at 28–30°C with constant churning to build depth and structure. When the must reaches the ideal sweetness, grape brandy is added to create the final fortified wine.

This Port is made from a single harvest and aged in oak barrels for a minimum of seven years. Slow oxidative ageing develops its dried‑fruit richness, spice complexity and silky texture. Bottling occurs only when the wine reaches perfect maturity.

How shall I store this Port?

Store upright in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations. Benefits from stable conditions to preserve their dried‑fruit aromatics and silky texture. Once opened, refrigerate and enjoy within several weeks for the freshest expression.

Is decanting required?

No decanting required - long cask ageing means the wine is already open and expressive. If you prefer a slightly lifted aromatic profile, pour into a small carafe 15-20 minutes before serving to enhance the spice and dried‑fruit notes.

How should the Port be served?

Serve slightly chilled at 12-14°C to highlight the wine’s finesse, acidity and spice. A small tulip‑shaped Port glass helps focus the dried‑fruit and caramelised aromas.
