Tasting Notes

Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

One of Sauternes most distinguished expressions, crafted from late‑harvested grapes affected by noble rot. This meticulous selection concentrates flavour, texture and aromatic complexity, resulting in a wine that balances richness with remarkable freshness. The estate’s deep gravel soils and proximity to the Ciron River create ideal conditions for botrytis, while precise winemaking preserves purity and lift.

Tasting Profile:

  • Appearance: A deep golden hue catches the light with a warm, luminous glow that hints at richness and maturity.
  • Nose: Aromas unfold with candied orange peel, citrus zest and subtle mineral tones, lifted by delicate floral sweetness.
  • Palate: The palate feels lush and layered, carrying honey, toasted almonds, baked apricot and gentle spice with seamless balance.
  • Finish: A smooth, lingering finish reveals candied fruit, soft warmth and a refreshing lift that keeps the wine poised.

Occasion & Buyer Profile

Ideal for celebrations, anniversaries, dinner parties and special desserts, or as a prestigious gift for a wine lover. Its richness and complexity also make it particularly rewarding for milestone birthdays, Christmas and sophisticated after-dinner occasions.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this dessert wine, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

Pairs beautifully with foie gras, blue cheese, roast poultry with fruit glazes, or lightly spiced dishes that complement its sweetness and texture. Its freshness cuts through richness, while its honeyed depth enhances savoury flavours with elegance.

For sweet pairings, choose desserts that echo the wine’s citrus, honey and stone‑fruit profile: creme brulee, apricot tart, almond pastries, roasted peaches or orange‑scented cakes. These flavours mirror the wine’s candied fruit and spice without overwhelming its balance.

Ideal for festive gatherings, Christmas entertaining, winter celebrations and refined dinner‑party finales. It appeals to buyers who appreciate classic French dessert wines, collectors of Premier Cru Sauternes and anyone seeking a luxurious bottle for special occasions or gifting.

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Chateau Suduiraut

Chateau Suduiraut is a prestigious Bordeaux estate in Sauternes, officially classified as a Premier Cru in 1855, and recognised for producing some of the region’s finest sweet wines. Its history dates back to 1580, with the chateau rebuilt in the 17th century and surrounded by classical gardens designed by the famed landscape architect Andre Le Notre.

The estate’s vineyards are planted on well-draining gravel and sandy-clay soils, encouraging natural concentration and complexity. Dominated by Semillon with a proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, the wines are crafted through careful hand selection of noble-rotten grapes, resulting in a style defined by richness, freshness and aromatic depth.

FAQs For Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

How should this wine be served?
  • Slightly chilled, around 10–12°C.
  • Serve in a small dessert‑wine glass to focus aromatics and sweetness.

How is Suduiraut made?
  1. From the start of the harvest they found that concentrations were worthy of the greatest vintages.
  2. Blend of Semillon 93%, Sauvignon blanc 7%.
  3. Late‑harvested grapes were hand‑picked in multiple passes, then fermented.
  4. Aged in oak barrels. 45% in new barrels, 55% from barrels of one vintage, for 20 months.
How long can this wine age for?

Ageing for several decades in the bottle - developing caramel, saffron and dried‑fruit notes over time.

What is noble rot and how does it affect the grapes?

Noble rot is a beneficial form of the fungus Botrytis cinerea that develops in Sauternes when morning mists and warm afternoons create perfect conditions. It punctures the grape skins, slowly dehydrating the berries and concentrating their sugars, acidity and flavour.

This natural process intensifies notes of honey, apricot, citrus and spice, giving Sauternes its signature richness, texture and aromatic complexity.
