Mulline Portarlington Pinot Noir Overview

Mulline Portarlington Pinot Noir is an Australian red wine from a single vineyard on the Bellarine Peninsula, within Victoria’s Geelong wine region. It offers wild strawberry and kirsch aromas, with white pepper and dried mountain herbs. The palate is concentrated yet balanced, combining juicy red fruit, silky tannins and lively acidity, leading to a fresh, spice-laced finish.

Serve with roast duck, herb-roasted chicken or mushroom risotto. Its balance of fresh fruit and savoury spice suits relaxed dinners, weekend meals and occasions when a more delicate red wine is preferred.

Tasting Notes

Mulline Portarlington Pinot Noir

From a single vineyard on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula, this Pinot Noir reflects the coastal conditions of the Geelong wine region. Planted with MV6 clones in 1998, the vineyard produces delicate red fruit complemented by whole-bunch spice and French oak. Concentrated yet refined, it balances juicy fruit, silky tannins and refreshing acidity.

Tasting Profile:

  • Appearance: Bright crimson-purple with vibrant colour.
  • Nose: Wild strawberries and kirsch lead into white pepper and dried mountain herbs.
  • Palate: Juicy red fruit combines with silky tannins, lively acidity and savoury herbal spice.
  • Finish: Elegant and persistent, with fresh fruit and lingering peppery, herbal notes.

Occasion & Buyer Profile

A great choice for weekend meals with friends, especially when serving dishes with plenty of flavour but not heavy sauces. The elegant style makes it approachable for a wide range of palates while offering enough complexity to spark conversation around the table.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this red wine, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

Roast duck with crispy skin and a cherry glaze is an excellent match because the juicy fruit character complements the sweetness in the sauce. The silky texture handles the richness comfortably, while the herbal spice adds another layer of savoury interest. Serve slightly chilled for extra freshness.

Mushroom risotto with Parmesan and fresh thyme works beautifully thanks to the balance between earthy flavours and bright red fruit. The lively acidity prevents the creamy texture from feeling heavy, while the subtle spice brings added complexity.

Mulline

Mulline Vintners works across Geelong in Victoria, sourcing grapes from three distinctive subregions: Moorabool Valley, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. Each area offers different soils, maritime influences and growing conditions, allowing the winery to explore variations in grape character and seasonal expression.

The Moorabool Valley lies between Geelong and Ballarat and is generally the warmest and driest of the three areas. Its vineyards include sites around Bannockburn and Sutherlands Creek, where limestone, clay and loam soils provide conditions for structured wines.

The Bellarine Peninsula is surrounded by Port Phillip, Corio Bay and Bass Strait. Its maritime climate and coastal breezes influence vineyards around Portarlington and Drysdale. Further west, the Surf Coast experiences higher rainfall and cooling ocean winds, with vineyards such as Brown Magpie at Modewarre offering another expression of the region.

Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah are central to Mulline's portfolio, alongside varieties such as Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The winery produces both regional blends and single-vineyard wines, using the latter to highlight the differences between individual sites.

Winemaking is designed to retain structure and freshness while allowing each variety and vineyard to express itself. The team uses French oak for much of its maturation, with some Austrian oak for Fume Blanc, and works with full solids for white wines and whole bunches for selected reds.

Environmental responsibility also informs the business. Mulline works with growers who share its viticultural principles, limits unnecessary vineyard inputs where possible and uses lightweight bottles, recyclable screwcaps and packaging with recycled content. These choices support its wider commitment to producing distinctive wines with consideration for their environmental impact.
