Tasting Notes

Joseph Mellot La Grande Chatelaine Sancerre

This wine showcases Sauvignon Blanc from old vines rooted in the pebble-rich caillottes soils of Sancerre. French oak fermentation and 11 months of barrel ageing create added breadth and complexity, while preserving the variety’s freshness. With its ripe fruit, flinty notes and elegant structure, this is a distinctive white for the dinner table or cellar.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this white wine, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

Grilled salmon with lemon and herbs or scallops served with a light butter sauce bring out the wine’s ripe fruit and mineral character. The richness of the fish works well with the added texture from oak ageing, while the wine’s freshness keeps the pairing balanced. Monkfish with a delicate cream sauce is also a good choice.

A lightly sweetened pear and almond tart can work as a gentle dessert option, echoing the wine’s pear and vanilla notes. Keep the pastry and filling restrained in sweetness, as a very sugary dessert may make the wine taste sharper and less expressive.

Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Joseph Mellot

Joseph Mellot is a historic family wine producer based in Sancerre, in France's Centre-Loire region. The family's winemaking history dates back to 1513, with generations of growers building their knowledge of the Loire Valley's distinctive vineyards and grape varieties.

At the end of the seventeenth century, Cesar Mellot served as wine adviser to King Louis XIV, reflecting the family's longstanding reputation in the wine trade. Over subsequent generations, the business expanded beyond Sancerre, acquiring vineyards and estates across the Centre-Loire.

Alexandre Mellot played an important role in developing the company into a regional producer. The winery acquired Domaine des Mariniers in Pouilly-Fume in 1994, Domaine Pierre Duret in Quincy in 1995 and Domaine Jean-Michel Sorbe in Quincy and Reuilly in 1999. These acquisitions broadened its portfolio while preserving the identities of the individual estates.

Since 2005, Catherine Corbeau-Mellot has led the business, continuing the work of her husband Alexandre and earlier generations. Under her leadership, Joseph Mellot has maintained its focus on quality, environmental responsibility and the transmission of winemaking knowledge.

Today, Joseph Mellot produces wines across eight Centre-Loire appellations, offering a broad view of the region's different terroirs. Its portfolio includes Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and other local varieties, with each wine reflecting the character of its vineyard and appellation.
