Tawny Port

Tawny port is aged in small oak casks rather than large tanks or bottles, which allows slow oxidation to gradually transform the wine over years and decades. The colour fades from deep red to warm amber, and the fresh fruit character of young port gives way to complex notes of dried fruit, walnuts, caramel, toffee and spice. The result is one of the most elegant and versatile styles of port, equally at home served chilled as an aperitif or after dinner alongside cheese and nuts.

There are two main categories of tawny. Basic tawny port is a blend of several recent vintages with no age statement, offering an accessible and affordable introduction to the style. Aged tawny port carries an age statement of 10, 20, 30 or 40 years, reflecting the average age of the blend and representing a significant step up in complexity and prestige with each increment. What is tawny port and how is it made?

Tawny port is a style of port wine aged in small oak casks where slow, controlled oxidation gradually transforms the wine over years or decades. How should tawny port be served?

Tawny port is best served lightly chilled at 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, noticeably cooler than ruby or vintage port. Put it in the fridge for 30 to 45 minutes before serving. How long does tawny port last once opened?

Tawny port is one of the most robust port styles once opened, thanks to its long oxidative ageing. Keep it refrigerated with a good stopper and consume within four to six weeks.
