Tasting Notes

Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel

A carefully composed blend drawn from diverse vineyard sites across Sonoma County, including Dry Creek, Russian River, Alexander and Sonoma Valley. Each vintage is built from numerous small fermentations, allowing individual vineyard parcels to express their distinct character before final blending.

This meticulous approach, combined with estate-grown fruit and long-standing grower relationships, results in a Zinfandel that is both expressive and finely structured, reflecting Seghesio’s reputation as one of Sonoma’s reference producers.

Tasting Profile:

  • Appearance: Rich, saturated ruby with purple depth and excellent clarity.
  • Nose: Generous and lifted, showing ripe raspberry, blueberry and dark cherry, supported by briar, mint leaf and warm spice nuances.
  • Palate: Energetic and layered, with a core of juicy red and dark fruit framed by supple tannins. Petite Sirah contributes structure and colour, while acidity keeps the wine fresh and focused through the mid-palate.
  • Finish: Long and harmonious, with persistent berry fruit, subtle spice and a clean, slightly savoury edge.

Seghesio

Seghesio Family Vineyards is a pioneering Sonoma County winery established in 1895 by Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio. After his passing in 1934, the family expanded the estate through careful vineyard acquisition, identifying and purchasing premium sites across Sonoma County based on soil quality and grape potential.

Today, the winery continues this legacy by working with multiple Zinfandel vineyard blocks across the region, each individually farmed and harvested before being blended into expressive final wines. Winemaker Andy Robinson selects the best parcels, with Petite Sirah added in small amounts to enhance structure and colour.

The estate is committed to sustainable viticulture, focusing on long-term vineyard health, minimal environmental impact and careful resource management in both vineyard and winery. The resulting wines are known for their vibrant fruit character, spice and classic Sonoma balance.

Our Review:

“Loads of juicy, dark fruit and that classic Zinfandel warmth. It’s the kind of red that feels generous from the first sip.”
