Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Esporao

Esporao is a Portuguese wine producer founded in 1973 when Jose Roquette and Joaquim Bandeira acquired Herdade do Esporao in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alentejo. The estate has a much older history, with its boundaries established in 1267 and its landscape shaped by centuries of agriculture, wine and olive growing.

The Esporao brand was launched with its first vintage in 1985, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Portuguese wine. Wine exports began in 1989 and have since expanded to more than 50 international markets.

A key figure in the development of Esporao was Australian winemaker David Baverstock, who joined the estate in 1992. His arrival coincided with a period of major development in both the vineyards and winery, helping establish a stronger focus on quality and experimentation.

Over time, Esporao has expanded beyond its original Alentejo home. The acquisition of Quinta dos Murcas brought the producer into the Douro, while Quinta do Ameal extended its presence into Vinho Verde. The company also produces olive oil and craft beer alongside its wines.

Today, Esporao remains a family-owned business with a strong focus on responsibility, creativity and quality. Its portfolio brings together wines from several Portuguese regions while maintaining a clear connection with the landscapes and traditions from which they originate.
