Ribeira Velha Douro Tinto Overview

Ribeira Velha Douro Tinto is a Portuguese red wine from the Douro Valley. Deep garnet in colour, it opens with aromas of blackberry, black plum and delicate floral hints. The palate offers juicy plum, blackberry and black cherry, supported by supple tannins, a smooth texture and a rounded, lingering finish.

Pairs well with grilled meats, roast beef and hearty Mediterranean dishes. Its generous fruit and approachable structure make it suited to relaxed dinners, weekend roasts, barbecues and cosy evenings at home.

Tasting Notes

Ribeira Velha Douro Tinto

Ribeira Velha is a generous Douro red blending Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca in a fruit-led, well-rounded style. Blackberry, plum and black cherry flavours give the wine plenty of richness, while fresh acidity and supple tannins keep it balanced. Partial oak ageing adds gentle depth without taking attention away from the ripe fruit.

Tasting Profile:

  • Appearance: Deep garnet red with rich colour.
  • Nose: Aromas of ripe blackberry and black plum are complemented by soft floral notes.
  • Palate: Juicy blackberry, plum and black cherry flavours combine with smooth tannins and subtle oak.
  • Finish: Rounded and lingering, with ripe dark fruit, gentle oak and refreshing vibrancy.

Occasion & Buyer Profile

Planning a cosy evening meal or gathering friends around the table for grilled meats makes this an excellent choice. The balance between ripe fruit and subtle oak gives it enough depth for food without feeling heavy.

Food Pairing

Food Pairing Suggestions

Here are a few serving suggestions and pairing ideas to help you get the most from this red wine, whether you’re enjoying it with food or simply savouring it on its own.

Slow-roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic is an excellent match for the wine's dark fruit character and supple tannins. The richness of the meat softens the structure, while the floral notes bring extra lift to each mouthful. Serve slightly below room temperature for the best balance.

Wild mushroom and Parmesan risotto offers a satisfying vegetarian pairing. The savoury umami flavours complement the wine's subtle oak influence, while the juicy blackberry and plum notes provide contrast to the earthy character of the dish. Serve with plenty of freshly grated Parmesan.

Enoport

Enoport United Wines brings together more than a century of Portuguese wine history. The group was formed in 2005 through the unification of several established family wine companies, including Caves Velhas, Caves Dom Teodosio, Adegas Camilo Alves and Caves Moura Basto. Its roots extend back to 1881, when Joao Camilo Alves founded Adegas Camilo Alves.

The companies that became part of Enoport developed strong reputations across different Portuguese wine regions. Caves Dom Teodosio was founded in 1924 and became an early pioneer in bottled wine, while Caves Moura Basto was established in 1940 with a focus on Vinho Verde. Caves Velhas followed in 1939, becoming associated with wines of Garrafeira classification and later developing a broad national portfolio.

Enoport expanded its estate portfolio with the acquisition of Quinta Sao Joao Batista in the Tejo in 1988 and Quinta do Boicao in Bucelas in 1989. These properties strengthened the group's position in two important Portuguese wine regions and remain central to its production today.

The group now manages a broad portfolio of established Portuguese brands, including Cabeca de Toiro, Quinta do Boicao, Quinta de Sao Joao Batista, Lagosta, Romeira, Caves Velhas and Bucellas. Its wines cover different regions, grape varieties and styles while retaining a strong connection to Portuguese wine heritage.

Enoport combines this heritage with modern production and distribution. Its Rio Maior facilities include specialised bottling lines, while the group exports its wines to international markets. The business continues to build on its historic brands while developing wines for contemporary consumers.
