Port Wine

Port wine is a fortified wine produced in the Douro, a valley in Portugal running from near the Spanish border in the north-east of the country to Porto, the coastal city which gives the wine its name.

We tend to associate port with stilton cheese but it is a versatile wine. White port is great with tonic water. Ruby port and some cheaper tawny ports can be used to make summer cocktails in place of vermouth; a chilled tawny makes a nice aperitif. Some of the younger vintage ports are a perfect with dark chocolate. Basically it is going to be with us for a long time, it's not just for Christmas.

Port Wine FAQs

What exactly is Port wine?

Port is a fortified wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley. It's richer and sweeter than regular wine thanks to the addition of grape spirit, which stops fermentation early and locks in natural sweetness.

What types of Port are available?

From youthful Ruby to nutty, aged Tawny, and elegant Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) to rare Vintage Port, each style offers something unique. We also stock White and Rose Ports for lighter, refreshing options.

What does Port taste like?

Port can range from bold, fruity and full-bodied (Ruby, LBV) to silky and mellow with caramel, fig and spice notes (Tawny). White and Rose Ports bring floral and citrus elements to the mix.

What foods go well with Port?
  • Ruby/LBV: chocolate desserts, cheeses like Stilton
  • Tawny: nuts, crème brulee, dried fruit
  • White Port: salted almonds, seafood, tonic-based cocktails

How long will an opened bottle of Port last?

Storing port wine is relatively simple, but attention to detail will reward you with a port that maintains its full depth of flavour elegance.

  • Ruby & LBV: 1-2 weeks
  • Tawny: 3-4 weeks
  • Vintage: ideally within 48 hours

Keep corked and chilled to maintain quality.

What’s a great Port for Christmas or winter?
