Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Herdade do Peso

Herdade do Peso is a landmark wine estate in Vidigueira, in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal. The property has been developed over three decades by the Guedes family and Sogrape, building its reputation around wines that express the character of the region.

Sogrape acquired Herdade do Peso in 1997 and has since invested in developing the vineyards, winery and wider estate. Today, the property has 160 hectares of vineyards and is one of Sogrape's flagship Alentejo brands. The estate forms part of Sogrape's long-term commitment to producing wines that reflect Portugal's regional diversity.

The modern Herdade do Peso combines traditional Alentejo knowledge with contemporary winemaking. The estate's development has included investment in a new winery and greater understanding of its individual vineyard areas. This work is led by winemaker Luis Cabral de Almeida, who has focused on interpreting the character of Vidigueira through its vineyards and wines.

Herdade do Peso has also placed increasing emphasis on biodiversity and the natural environment. Its wider estate includes native vegetation and ancient olive trees, including an olive tree dated at more than 3,700 years. This exceptional natural heritage forms an important part of the property's identity and its approach to sustainability.

Today, Herdade do Peso offers a broad portfolio of Alentejo wines, from accessible regional expressions through to wines selected from specific vineyard parcels. Its aim remains firmly centred on revealing the character and diversity of the Alentejo through modern, expressive wines.
