Port Wine FAQs

What exactly is Port wine?

Port is a fortified wine from Portugal’s Douro Valley. It's richer and sweeter than regular wine thanks to the addition of grape spirit, which stops fermentation early and locks in natural sweetness.

What types of Port are available?

Port is a fortified wine from Portugal's Douro Valley. Grape spirit is added during fermentation, which stops the process early and locks in natural sweetness while raising the alcohol level to around 19–22% ABV. It is produced exclusively in the Douro and takes its name from the city of Porto.

What does Port taste like?

Ruby and LBV port are bold, fruity and full-bodied with dark berry, plum and chocolate notes. Tawny port is smoother and more mellow with caramel, fig, almond and spice. White port brings floral, citrus and stone fruit character. Vintage port is the most complex with layers of dried fruit, leather, cedar and dark chocolate developing over decades.

What is the difference between LBV and Vintage port?

LBV is made from a single harvest year, aged four to six years in oak, filtered and bottled ready to drink. Vintage port is declared only in exceptional years, bottled after two years in oak, and requires years or decades of bottle ageing to reach its peak. LBV is more accessible in price and ready to enjoy immediately. Vintage port is a long-term investment.

What foods go well with Port?

Ruby and LBV pair beautifully with dark chocolate, Stilton, mature Cheddar and blue-veined cheeses. Tawny is wonderful with almond pastries, creme brulee, dried figs and walnuts. White port works brilliantly as an aperitif with salted almonds, light seafood and tonic water. Vintage port is the classic match for Stilton and walnuts after a special meal.

How long will an opened bottle of Port last?

Ruby and LBV port will keep well for one to two weeks once opened, stored in a cool place with the cork replaced. Tawny port lasts longer, three to four weeks as the oak ageing gives it more oxidative stability. Vintage port is best enjoyed within 24 to 48 hours of opening as its delicate aromas fade quickly. Always store opened port away from direct light and heat.

What is the best port wine for beginners?

Ruby port is the most approachable starting point offering a fruit-forward, not overly complex, and very food-friendly. Taylor's LBV is a step up that many beginners find immediately rewarding.
