Tasting Notes

Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs

From Ridge Vineyards’ historic Lytton Springs vineyard in California’s Dry Creek Valley, this vintage brings together Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Mataro. Rich and full-bodied yet finely balanced, it combines ripe blackberry fruit with raspberry, black pepper and subtle American oak spice. Natural fermentation and careful maturation allow the character of the vineyard and vintage to remain at the heart of the wine.

The growing season benefited from welcome winter rainfall following several years of drought, while favourable conditions during flowering helped restore crop levels. Fourteen months in American oak further integrated the wine’s fruit, tannins and spice.

Tasting Profile:

  • Appearance: Rich, deep red with impressive concentration.
  • Nose: Expressive and layered, with raspberry, vanilla and black pepper alongside hints of warming spice.
  • Palate: Generous and full-bodied, delivering ripe blackberry and dark fruit with lively acidity and firm, polished tannins.

Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

Ridge Vineyards

Ridge Vineyards is one of California's most respected wine producers, with its history rooted in the historic Monte Bello Vineyard, where vines were first planted in 1885 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The modern winery was established in 1959, when a group of Stanford Research Institute engineers began making wine at the site, eventually turning Ridge into one of America's most influential fine wine producers.

The estate became internationally recognised for its Cabernet Sauvignon from Monte Bello, particularly after the wine famously performed alongside some of France's finest Bordeaux wines in the 1976 Judgment of Paris retrospective tastings. Ridge subsequently developed a strong reputation for producing age-worthy wines that express the character of their individual vineyard sites.

The winery's portfolio has also become closely associated with Zinfandel, particularly old-vine field blends from California's historic vineyards. Throughout its history, Ridge has maintained a strong belief that great wine begins with exceptional vineyards, allowing the character of the site and vintage to take centre stage.

Today, Ridge Vineyards remains committed to producing distinctive California wines with a strong sense of place, combining historic vineyards, traditional winemaking and a remarkably consistent focus on quality.

FAQs For Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs 2016

How is this vintage made?

Winter rains eased the drought and set the stage for a healthy growing season. Fine weather in May supported excellent flowering and fruit set, while natural yeast fermentations progressed slowly and steadily. The wine was pressed after eight days and completed malolactic fermentation naturally.

Ageing took place over fourteen months in air‑dried American oak barrels, 15% new, with the remainder one to five years old. Ridge’s minimal‑intervention approach guides every step: native fermentations, restrained sulfur use and careful barrel selection, allowing the vineyard’s character to shine.

What grapes are used?

The blend is 69% Zinfandel, 23% Petite Sirah, 6% Carignane and 2% Mataro.

Is this a full-bodied wine?

Yes. It is full-bodied and concentrated, with substantial dark fruit, firm acidity and structured tannins.

How should this fine wine be served?

Serve at around 16-18°C. Decanting can help open the wine and reveal its layers of dark fruit, spice and oak.
