Meet The Producer

Meet The Wine Producer Behind The Bottle

A brief look at the producer’s heritage and winemaking approach.

La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta is one of Spain's most distinguished wine producers, founded in 1890 in Haro, at the heart of Rioja Alta. Five families came together to establish the winery with the ambition of creating wines capable of expressing the exceptional character of the region, and the company has remained closely connected to traditional Rioja winemaking ever since.

The winery's history is deeply intertwined with Haro's famous Barrio de la Estacion, where many of Rioja's most respected producers established their cellars. La Rioja Alta has built its reputation around wines that combine carefully selected fruit with extended ageing, developing the elegance, complexity and longevity that define classic Rioja.

The producer is particularly celebrated for iconic wines including Vina Ardanza, Gran Reserva 904 and Gran Reserva 890, each reflecting the house's commitment to quality and patience. La Rioja Alta also maintains an unusually high degree of control over production, including the production of its own oak barrels at its cooperage in Haro.

More than 130 years after its foundation, La Rioja Alta remains a family-owned winery dedicated to preserving Rioja's traditions while continually refining its approach to vineyard management and winemaking.

FAQs For La Rioja Alta Rioja Reserva Vina Ardanza 2019

How is this wine made?

Tempranillo is sourced from 30‑year‑old vines in Rioja Alta, while Garnacha comes from the stony soils of La Pedriza in Rioja Oriental. Each variety is fermented and aged separately in American oak barrels crafted by La Rioja Alta’s own cooperage. Tempranillo for 36 months, Garnacha for 30 months.

After blending, the wine undergoes extended bottle ageing to refine texture, integrate flavours and enhance longevity. This meticulous, time‑honoured process creates a Reserva of exceptional balance, depth and ageing potential.

How should this wine be served?

Serve at a cool room temperature, ideally around 16–18°C. Decanting can be beneficial, particularly with older bottles, to help the wine open and separate any natural sediment.

Is this red wine suitable for ageing?

Yes. Its combination of acidity, tannins, fruit concentration and extensive maturation gives it good ageing potential, although the precise window depends on the storage conditions.

Is this a full-bodied wine?

It has considerable depth and concentration, but its silky tannins and developed fruit profile give it an elegant and balanced character rather than simply relying on weight.
