History - Niepoort are an independent family business founded in 1842. Through five generations the business has passed successfully from one Niepoort to the next Niepoort and in most cases the older and younger generation worked side by side for a long period.

Development -  Dirk Niepoort, the fifth and latest generation, joined his father in the family business in 1987 and was challenged to innovate & yet maintain the good traditions. The first important step was the acquisition of their first self-owned vineyards: Quinta de Nápoles and Quinta do Carril in Cima Corgo, a region that traditionally produces the best Port Wines.

Today - the twenty five hectares of both new and old vines were an important step for Niepoort; nevertheless, the tradition of buying the annual harvests of selected Douro producers is still an important source of grapes.
